tissue sampling and polyp removal. Earlier devices were quite large and rigid,
restricting their use to only the largest polyps in the easiest to reach areas
of the colon.
Modern biopsy forceps are much smaller and offer jaw designs optimized for
controlled tissue grasping. Some reusable forceps even feature jaw closure
indicators that provide visual confirmation of a proper sample. For polypectomy,
various snares and kits now allow doctors to safely and effectively remove
diminutive polyps as small as 3mm located throughout the length of the colon.
New preloaded, single-use biopsy kits are stimulating shift toward their use
and help prevent the risks of instrument damage or cross-contamination. Some
innovative kits integrate both biopsy forceps and snares into a single
multi-functional device. This consolidation of tools helps streamline the
sampling process. Improved polypectomy techniques using techniques such as the
“clip and cut” method allow polyps to be removed in one piece for optimal
pathological evaluation.
Advanced Accessories for Enhanced Procedures
Colonoscope manufacturers continue developing new accessories to expand the capabilities
of colonoscopy. Some examples include guidewires, balloon dilators, and
overtubes designed to facilitate intubation of difficult sections of the colon.
Water jets help cleanse and clear debris from obscure colonic views. Cap-fitted
colonoscopes are useful for controlling water circulation and insulation during
polypectomy.
Colon cleaning and irrigation systems have progressed far past bulky manual
pumps. Compact electromechanical pumps now deliver precisely controlled water
flows and volumes. Some systems monitor fluid temperature and even integrate
pulsed irrigation to effectively cleanse all segments of the colon without
uncomfortable overfilling. Accessories for tattooing, argon plasma coagulation,
and various hemostasis techniques enable colonoscopies to take on therapeutic
roles beyond basic screening.
On the horizon are single-use devices for colon disinfection and sensing
technologies capable of detecting colon inflammation in real-time. As the
demands and responsibilities of colonoscopy continue expanding, new tools will
further enhance capabilities while reducing risks, costs, and discomfort for
patients and providers alike.
